Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the course for? It is only for White people?
Beyond Bias: Dialogs on Race is for all people - anyone who wants to learn more about the historical roots of discrimination against Black people in the United States, is unafraid to examine their own beliefs, stereotypes, and biases, and is motivated to participate in helping our society get closer to the goals of fairness, justice, and equality for everyone. The course is designed for self-paced personal development, and is also perfect for workforce training as well as specialized use in a wide range of organizational settings - schools, non-profits, religious communities, legal agencies, and law enforcement. If you are an organizational leader, contact us to learn more about how we can customize Beyond Bias: Dialogs on Race for your specific needs. If you already own your own business or are a workplace leader, the course will help you identify potential areas of growth and change in your organization and set a strong example for those you lead.
There are so many forms of bias and discrimination. Why does this course focus only on bias against Black people?
Beyond Bias: Dialogs on Race is the first in a series of planned courses addressing multiple forms of racial, ethnic, and gender bias. The effectiveness of the course springs from our understanding that highly specific stereotypes drive the development of biased beliefs and acts of discrimination. We feel strongly that biases against specific groups of people need to be addressed as specifically as possible.
What if I’m Black? Can I benefit from taking this course?
Yes. Those who are the targets of bias and discrimination are exposed to the same types of social influences as are the people who engage in acts of bias and discrimination. And as we know from experience in so many areas of life, a clear understanding of the roots of a problem is essential if you want to see that problem change. Whether you are White, Black, Asian, a member of a different racial group, or have a blended racial identity, you will come away from the course with a clear understanding of anti-Black bias in America, and with a sense of the steps that can be taken to help change it. You will be better equipped to talk about problems of racial bias with others, and better prepared to be a leader on this issue in terms of fostering real change - whether within yourself, your family group, your social circle, or your workplace.
This subject is important, but I’m so busy. How can I fit taking this course into my life?
Beyond Bias: Dialogs on Race is completely self-paced — you have access to the material online at any time, and once you have purchased the course you can complete it as quickly or slowly as you wish. Beyond Bias: Dialogs on Race consists of 8 modules. Ideally, to maximize the course’s effectiveness, we suggest completing one module per week, giving yourself plenty of time to work on the reflective exercises that accompany each module.
