Beyond Bias: Dialogs on Race - School Edition is about understanding racial bias (especially, racial bias against Black students), how racial bias impacts Black students, and how to further create a Growth Mindset culture (to not only help mitigate implicit racial bias but also) to further develop an environment for all students that is consistent with your school’s mission and values.
- Recognize how stereotypes and biases develop
- Increase your understanding of racial bias, specifically bias against Black people (and how this underlies bias against Black students)
- Identify how these biases affect Black students
- Gain an overview of growth mindset and appreciate the impact of growth mindset versus fixed mindset on students
- Increase teacher agency to change these biases, with commitment to creating a Growth Mindset culture, including creating an environment of belonging.
Your Instructor
Dr. Flagg is a practicing clinical psychologist with deep expertise in human development, strengths-based approach, and cognitive behavioral training methods including mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and self-compassion. In addition to her doctorate in clinical psychology, she has a master’s in education. She has worked as a school counselor in multiple settings and across developmental levels. She is currently the student wellness director at her school. As part of that role, she leads commitment to SEL implementation and works closely with the DEI director and coordinators to support the DEI mission and initiatives. Supporting student emotional resilience is her passion. As part of this, she is an advocate for creating an inclusive, growth mindset school culture.
